Scientific Studies Association (ILEM) calls for papers for 6th STT-MENA Conference on “Interactions: Civilizations, Societies and Living with the Other” on December 14-15, 2017 in Nicosia, Northern Cyprus. In this conference, scholars from various disciplines will discuss different aspects and effects of interactions between civilizations and societies. The conference aims to go beyond current agenda and perspectives on the topic and highlight new dimensions to promote new ideas in the study of society and politics through theoretical and methodological discussions and cases of interdisciplinary field works.
International Conference on Social Thought and Theory in the MENA Region (STT-MENA) revolves around issues of social thought and is open to intellectuals from all around the world. It aims to become one of the main platforms of highlighting issues of social thought and providing an environment to discuss historical and contemporary problems. The priority of the conference is demonstrating good examples of theory-building, methodological queries, and research proposals with free-thinking and open-mindedness. It also supports senior and junior academicians of the region to come together to deepen scholarly connections. The conference is supervised by a committee of distinguished scholars in the region and hosted annually by one university or academic institution. Previous conferences were organized in Tehran, İstanbul, Beirut and Sakarya.
This year the 6th STT-MENA Conference will be organized by Scientific Studies Association (ILEM) on December 14-15, 2017 in Nicosia, Northern Cyprus. The conference will be hosted by Cyprus Social Science University, and supported by Istanbul Medeniyet University (Turkey), National University of Malaysia (Malaysia), National University of Singapore (Singapore), The Institute of Humanities and Cultural Studies (Iran), , American University of Beirut (Lebanon), Iranian Sociological Association and International Sociological Association.
The special theme of the conference is “Interactions: Civilizations, Societies and Living with the Other”. The conference will also accept papers on the aspects of social thought and theory in general, which is the main focus of the conference.
Civilization has been a widely argued theme at both macro and micro levels in analyzing societies. However, examining different aspects of the interaction relates to conceptualizing of civilization may not always be a solitary explaining factor in social sciences. At present, the concept of civilization necessarily requires a re-discussion in the midst of changes such as ever-increasing, growing circulation of capital on the globe, constant co-existence of peoples from different beliefs and cultural backgrounds that increase the possibility of interacting and facing the other. In last few decades, new areas of interaction arise between different societies, cultures, and civilizations. Establishment of diversified connections is also about to cause many social problems. Societies experience some rapid changes in terms of social structures, identities, attitudes, norms and practices. Discussions on interaction on the scope of civilization, society and the other can help harness the drawbacks while maintaining social cohesion and facilitate inclusion for the benefit of all sides.
In this context, submissions are sought on any topic related to civilization and socio-cultural interaction, including, but not limited to:
Abstracts on these topics or similar ones could be submitted by using online application form at sttmena.org/apply until August 31, 2017. The abstracts should be between 250-400 words. All submissions will be blind reviewed by the Program Committee on the basis of technical quality, relevance to main theme, originality, significance, and clarity. The final acceptance of the papers will be given after full paper submission on November 15, 2017. Accommodation expenses of selected participants will be covered by the organization. Unfortunately, there are no travel grants available. Selected papers will be published in a special issue after an extra editorial process.
